Introduction / History

The Bedoanas are an indigenous people living on the Bomberai Peninsula in Papua Barat Province, Indonesia. Their language, Bedoanas, belongs to the Austronesian family and is closely related to other languages of the New Guinea cluster. Historically, they have lived in small coastal villages such as Andamata, Fior, and Furir, relying on fishing and sago cultivation for sustenance. Their cultural identity is deeply tied to the land and sea, with traditions passed down orally through generations. Isolation has preserved much of their heritage, though modern influences are slowly reaching their communities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bedoanas lead a subsistence lifestyle. Men typically fish in coastal waters and hunt in nearby forests, while women gather sago, tend small gardens, and care for children. Extended families live in simple wooden homes on stilts, often clustered near waterways. Community life revolves around mutual cooperation, with strong kinship ties. Celebrations include traditional dances, feasts of fish and sago, and storytelling that reinforces cultural values. Marriage is usually arranged within the community, and elders play a key role in resolving disputes and guiding social norms.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bedoanas identify primarily with Christianity, though their faith is often mixed with traditional animistic practices. While many profess Christian beliefs and participate in church activities, there is a significant need for deeper understanding of biblical truth and discipleship. Spiritual renewal is essential, as cultural customs and ancestral traditions still influence daily life.

What Are Their Needs?

Churches need strong leaders grounded in biblical teaching. Limited schooling hinders opportunities for younger generations. Remote location means poor access to medical facilities. Skills training and sustainable livelihoods are needed to reduce poverty.
